This year’s Hong Kong Sevens was celebrated with all the excitement, brilliant rugby and party fanfare that have made this one of the world’s most celebrated sporting events.
The Hong Kong Sevens 2011 which ended on 27 March saw New Zealand beat closest rivals England 29-17 in the final to clinch their tenth Hong Kong Cup here. South Africa held off a fine challenge from Australia in a pulsating game to win the Plate with a 26-19 win and Canada defeated Japan to win the Bowl 33-12. Kenya won the Shield 17-12 in sudden death extra time against Spain.
From its humble beginnings in 1976, the Hong Kong event has become an internationally recognised phenomenon that attracts teams from the world’s top rugby nations who compete for four different trophies. Fans from all corners of the globe pack the 40,000-seat Hong Kong stadium.
Hong Kong will roll out the red carpet again for the Hong Kong Sevens teams and supporters in March 2012. For three action-packed days, Asia's world city is going to rock and roll all day and all night as the world's top Sevens teams vie to be the new champions.
