Hong Kong Palace Museum

The Hong Kong Palace Museum is due to open in July 2022 after five years in the making. Over 900 works of art to be displayed are all gems of the Palace Museum collection. This unprecedented loan is amongst the largest and the best the Palace Museum has ever lent to a cultural institution. Many of these treasures will be exhibited in Hong Kong for the first time, while others have never been displayed to the public. The Museum will build international partnerships and help position Hong Kong as a hub for arts and cultural exchange between Mainland China and the rest of the world.
Within its footprint of 13,000 square metres, the museum boasts a total floor area of about 30,000 square metres, with 7,800 square metres of exhibition space. Three atriums connect the different floors of the Museum vertically, referencing the horizontal spatial configuration of the Forbidden City’s central axis. Visitors can enjoy vistas of the Entrance Plaza, the Hong Kong Island skyline, and Lantau Island, while appreciating the harmony between the Museum building and its surroundings.
The Museum has nine galleries. Five galleries host thematic exhibitions, which introduce aspects of the fascinating history and culture of the Palace Museum through exceptional works from its collection. Two other galleries feature art collections in Hong Kong and multimedia projects. The final two galleries are devoted to special exhibition featuring Chinese art, as well as art and treasure from other parts of the world in dialogue with Chinese culture. The Museum is complemented by an array of amenities, including a 400-seat auditorium, learning and resource centre, activity rooms, atrium with viewing decks, gift shop and restaurants.
The Hong Kong Palace Museum will offer a rich variety of stimulating learning programmes in art and culture. Events will be able to make use of the museum’s valuable resources to create endless possibilities for enriching content and enhancing prestige.
