Xiqu Centre
The building has a total area of 28,164 sq m and houses Grand Theatre, accommodating 1,075 seats, Tea House Theatre, with a capacity of up to 168 seats, eight professional studios and FHKA seminar hall, all specially designed for different types of xiqu-related functions and activities. The design details of each of the facilities have also been created in response to the practical requirements and aesthetic features of the art form. A unique feature of the venue is the location of the Grand Theatre at the top of the building, which allows for a large open atrium below with space for exhibitions, stalls, and xiqu demonstrations and workshops.
Grand Theatre is a world-class venue showcasing high-quality traditional and contemporary xiqu performances. Tailor-made for professional xiqu presentations, the theatre is fitted with state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, the theatre has a seating capacity of 1,075. Tea House Theatre is designed to recreate the warm, authentic atmosphere of Hong Kong’s early 20th century tea houses, this small Chinese-style theatre offers an intimate experience that is perfect for visitors and audiences. FHKA Seminar Hall is designed for screenings, talks and cultural exchanges, it allows close communication and interaction between speakers and audience. The seating capacity is 112. Xiqu Centre houses four rehearsal studios of different sizes, each equipped with projection facilities and basic lighting and sound systems. Studios 1 and 3 have ceilings that are 8m high, providing realistic, stage-like overhead space. Studio 1 has dimensions the same as those of the stage to give performers an accurate sense of space and staging possibilities.
